Get Motivated Now: What You Need to Know

advertisement-motivationprofileIs there a certain area of your life that you are dissatisfied with but lack the motivation to change?

Perhaps you SHOULD   (that dirty word) stop smoking?

You know it’s time to lose those 50Lbs you’ve been carrying ( I know about that one)

Maybe you SHOULD  cut back on your drinking

You have contemplated changing your situation  for a long while now,  lately you’ve been giving it a lot of thought but once again  lack of motivation  shows it’s ugly head.

Okay, you know you have problem in this area you have seriously  given it a lot of thought, you have the desire, you want to change but you seem to  lack the time energy and willingness to take the necessary steps that would propel you in the right direction.

You look at what needs to be done and you become overwhelmed immobilized and stuck which reinforces more negative feelings – guilt your motivation wanes and falls out the window.

That’s okay.

“Be patient with yourself,” according to  Steven Covey author of the Book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, “self growth is tender you are standing on sacred ground.”

Maybe it’s time to stop, pause and reflect, perhaps the change  you desire, has less to do with motivation and more to do with readiness, confidence and support.

Here are 3 simple questions that you can ask yourself to begin  to  assess your level of motivation. Using a rating scale  of 1-10

Where 1 is low and  10 is high:

How ready are you to make the change that you desire?

0 1 2 3 4 6 7 8 9 10

Not Ready                                                                                                                                                Ready

How confident are you that  you can make the change that you desire?

0 1 2 3 4 6 7 8 9 10

Not Confident                                                                                                                            Confident

What would it take for you to move from where you are now in the areas of readiness and confidence to a higher number on  each of these scales?

There are lots of reasons why we  might rate our level of motivation  less than ten when it comes to  being ready for change. Here are some of the excuses that we  use that contributes to our  inactivity.

  • Lack  of time
  • Afraid to fail
  • Change is hard
  • We might upset the status quo

Motivation  is often   loaded with ambivalence the immediate  cost energy and effort can often out weight the long term benefits.

I am sure when answering the questions above most people gave themselves a number above zero.

Asking yourself the question why did I not rate myself at 0 is a  great place to start in terms of moving forward.

Your answer to this question will build momentum and help to propel you forward into taking more positive action steps.

Lets not forget that change is a process.  We can simplify our levels of overwhelm    by understanding that small steps one at a time  is what gets results.

Perhaps focus on cutting down smoking rather than  stopping altogether.

or

Maybe just focusing  on losing 2lbs rather than 50lbs. etc.

How would you go about eating an elephant?(If you are in the business of eating elephants.)  The answer of course is one bite at a time.

Motivation: The  inner power, the desire, the ambition that pushes you to take action toward your aims, objectives,  aspirations, and  goals.
